WHAT IS COURAGE IN LEADERSHIP, and how does it factor with integrity?

Today I want to ponder the notion of courage in leadership, particularly that statement “the courage of ones convictions”

Because it takes courage to be a leader that stands true to beliefs. Courage and Bravery.

Courage speaks to a Leaders ability to face difficulties, danger and pain without fear or with bravery. Bravery is true courage with a daring and boldness of the heart.

I think it’s a bit much to ask for our Leaders to be void of any fear .

I believe that true courage and bravery is an acknowledgement that its hard, and scary – yet important to face, to call on the grit necessary to do what must be done, and say what must be said.

To stand in our convictions.

It’s not the fear-lessness that propels us to be brave and to act with courage. It’s knowing that it’s the right thing. It’s an act of integrity.

To show courage as a leader takes:
- Belief – knowing what you stand for; whats right; your values; purpose – all that foundational necessary stuff.
- Choice – making the active decision; choosing whats right over whats easy/comfortable
- Action – taking the necessary action; but doing so in a way that also respects others.

We are always presented with opportunities to have the courage of our convictions, especially as leaders.

Courage demonstrates your integrity. Integrity builds trust. Trust creates flow.

If its helpful, I’ve put together a guide to help leaders gain an insight into how to build trust with your team. You are welcome to download it from here:
