When English language arts teacher Cathleen Beachboard was trying to come up with new ways of encouraging her students at Fauquier High School in Warrenton, Virginia, to be solution-oriented, she noticed that while kids often get stuck on their problems, they are quick to find solutions to other people’s. Her husband jokingly said, ”Wouldn’t it be cool if you could just speed-date problems?” And the problem speed-dating activity was born. Beachboard has used this quick and simple strategy in her classes ever since.

Building Problem-Solving Skills Through ‘Speed Dating’

When students solve each other’s problems, they gain confidence in their own skills and witness the power of collaboration in real time.

What an interesting topic? I like the reference to overlearning being closely associated with the concept of 'Flow' - a state of being completely immersed and focused in a particular activity. Dr Phil identifies the characteristics of this state of learning: 🔥 Challenge-Skill Balance 🔥 Clear goals and immediate feedback 🔥 Concentration and focus 🔥 Loss of self-consciousness and time distortion Learner profiling and using AI to help create an individualised learning pathway can be powerful tools for designing and delivering an engaging learning experience.

What does seem clear is that AI is here to stay, and today’s students will enter a world where they’ll be expected to engage with it. So students must understand the capabilities—and limitations—of AI tools, even as those capabilities rapidly evolve. With teachers’ help, students can learn not to rely on AI, but rather to use it in a responsible way that supports their learning process, and teachers can request transparency and accountability whenever students use these tools on their own.

9 Tips for Using AI for Learning (and Fun!)

Technological innovation is fundamentally transforming education, and updating the skills required for modern work. Building future-ready (and pandemic-proof) education systems requires curricula fit for the 21st century, coupled with the consistent delivery of widely-accessible instruction that builds a solid foundation for a lifetime of adapting and developing new abilities. Specialized education should focus in particular on skills that are in demand in the real world, and address the disconnect between employer needs and available talent pools.
