“Globally, it is estimated that 1 in 7 (14%) 10–19-year-olds experience mental health conditions, yet these remain largely unrecognized and untreated.” WHO, 2021.
For children, teens, and young adults to get the best out of their education, their mental health needs to be a priority. Anyone who is depressed or anxious will struggle to engage and focus on their work and negative mental health has far-reaching effects including bad sleeping habits and poor diet choices.
Teachers, parents, and leaders working with children and teens all need to be aware of the following points:
-
Adolescent mental health needs to be addressed to positively impact learning and life success.
-
How to identify and understand the different personality types and how they react to stress and the behaviours that may be exhibited.
-
Where to find tools that can help young people discover their unique strengths and natural capabilities.
-
How to understand and interpret the young person’s uniqueness and how to respond in a positive and helpful way.
-
Strategies to help young people grow their self-awareness and be able to express their emotions, feelings and thoughts.
