Where do I start?

An organisation generally conducts an assessment as a first intervention when it wants to improve organisational efficiency and effectiveness. It is a way to achieve overall competitiveness; good governance; satisfied customers, employees, suppliers and partners; significant gains in business results and productivity.

There are two ways of conducting an Organisational Assessment

  1. Get an external professional to do the assessment;
  2. Do an internal self-assessment using an excellence model.

Such a model involves a systematic process of evaluation that describes the state of the organisation and/or its business units at a specific time along key predetermined dimensions. 

The Excellence Model I use provides a comprehensive framework for assessing the state of the organisation about “excellence”. The model consists of eleven criteria used as guidelines on elements of an organisation to consider what the organisation does, how well it does what is being done, and how it is progressing towards an organisational gold-standard...excellence.

What are the benefits of self-assessment?

  • It provides direction and focus for the organisation. 
  • It facilitates improvement and progress.
  • It enables integration and coordination of different processes.
  • It enables benchmarking by providing a basis for comparison with other organisations.

A self-assessment can be conducted by members of the organisation as a self-diagnostic exercise or with the support of an external facilitator. Addressing both hard and soft governance issues, the model:

  • is fully measurable because of its structured approach to gap analysis,
  • makes for logical prioritisation and planning of corrective measures and allocation of resources,
  • promotes widespread buy-in into solutions,
  • prompts the organisation to undertake continuous improvement without being prescriptive.

The Excellence Model

The model I use divides business criteria into two categories: enablers (outcomes) and results.

 

1. ENABLERS

  • Leadership: How do individuals in the organisation inspire and provides leadership in the pursuit of excellence?
  • Policy and strategy: How are excellence and continuous improvement addressed when the organisation develops a vision, mission objectives, values, policies, and strategies?
  • Customers and market focus: How does the organisation addresses customer and market needs?
  • People management: How does the organisation address the needs of its people vis-à-vis skills, improvement, empowerment, and communication?
  • Resource and information management: How does the organisation use its resources (people, financial, physical, natural and intellectual)?
  • Processes: How does the organisation identify and improve both internal and external processes?
