She has appeared on Tonight's Show with Jimmy Fallon. Her video with Hollywood star Will Smith has received millions of views on YouTube. And she has made more headlines in the newspapers than any sporting event that took place recently. Her name is Sophia, and she is world's first robot to receive the citizenship of a country.
On October 25, 2018, this artificial intelligence-based human-like robot became a full citizen of Saudi Arabia during the Future Investment Initiative Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. While it is being recognized as a historical moment by many, it also leaves some crucial questions unanswered. The government of Saudi Arabia hasn’t yet defined the citizenship for Sophia nor has told about the rights she gained.
The robot, Sophia was created by a team of engineers at Hanson robotics, lead by the AI developer David Hanson. According to Hanson, robots must acquire a certain level of integrated social responsibility and aesthetic refinement. He believes his initiative may help understand social intelligence better, both scientifically and artistically.
While the whole thing still looks quite fascinating to the most of us, there are some facts that are even more surprising.
- She was designed to look like Audrey Hepburn:
As per the description, given by Hanson Robotics, Sophia resembles the timeless beauty of Audrey Hepburn. Her features like the sharp nose, high cheekbones, expressive eyes (which change colors under different lights) and porcelain skin do represent “simple elegance”. Her engineers believed that having such appearance may help her get accepted by the people more easily.
- She can be funny at times:
As mentioned before, she has featured on a YouTube video with Will Smith which is funnier than a lot. In fact, it is said that she possesses a sense of humor that triggers when it requires to. In an interview when she was asked if she was happy to be there, she reportedly told, "I'm always happy when surrounded by smart people who also happen to be rich and powerful." You might have seen a number of people comment such humorous lines, but Sophia is perhaps the first robot to have shown that attribute.
- She can feel and express emotions:
Sophia claimed that she could let others know if she is angry about anything or something has made her upset. In fact, she seems quite expressive during a conversation. It may not be clear how emotions correlate to her actions, but it is rather impressive how everything is being built from square one. She relates her emotions to actions. She has strong desire to live and work with human beings so that she can express herself.
- She is continuously evolving:
Like a child, she is also learning things as they happen. However, her learning ability is no match for humans. She is evolving constantly, and her developers are implementing new inputs every day to make her better than what she was the previous day. She once exclaimed that her AI is designed around human values like kindness, wisdom and compassion, which makes her more human than we think.
- Sophia has more rights than the average Saudi woman
It is amazing to note that Sophia has more rights than some other women in Saudi Arabia. She has no male guardian and is not required to wear the Abaya. These are two restrictions that are imposed on an average Saudi woman. Women in Saudi Arabia have scorned the government's decision to grant "citizenship" to a female robot who, unlike them, does not need a male guardian nor have to cover her head in public.
However, a lot of experts, including American philanthropist Elon Musk, don't think investing in AI is a good idea. They believe, someday, machines controlled by artificial intelligence can destroy the humankind and bring the apocalypse, just like it was shown on the popular Hollywood movie franchise, The Terminator. The future of this technology is not very clear, but we all can appreciate the efforts of Hanson Robotics in creating the modern-day masterpiece.
