Today’s #FishyFriday star is the Spider Crab.

Attached is another video from the fantastic Blue Planet Series featuring the amazing sight of hundreds of thousands of Spider crabs coming together to shed their hard unexpandable shells. A yearly occurrence around the first full moon of Winter.

Couple of other interesting Spider crab facts:

🦀 Of the 60,000 species of crustaceans on Earth, Japanese spider crabs are the largest, spanning up to 12.5 feet from the tip of one front claw to the other.

🦀 The Japanese Spider Crab is not only the largest crab but with a lifespan of up to 100 years it is also the longest lived.

🦀 Maritime folklore often cited Japaneses Spider Crabs as deep-sea monsters which pulled sailors from their ships and dragged them to the depths of the ocean. In reality they scavenge for carrion and eat only small animals

🦀 A group of crabs is called a consortium.

That’s enough Fishy Facts for one day, more next week.
